Amritsar Tourist Attractions

Amritsar city known as the Sikh Pilgrimage derives its name from the lake inside the Golden Temple. Amrit means nectar and Sar means Lake, this is how Amritsar got its name. The city houses several holy places in and around the vicinity. The mention f Amritsar would be incomplete without the mention Golden Temple. There are numerous Sikh Shrines in Amritsar but the Golden Temple is world famous and a major tourist attraction.

The HarMandir Saheb popularly known as Golden Temple got this name because the entire upper half of the Shrine is inlaid with copper and plated with gold. The architecture of the golden temple is the perfect blend of Hindu and Muslim style. Apart from a pilgrimage it has an Indo-Pak border known as the Wagah Border where people throng the most to see the change of guard ceremony. This “Retreat” ceremony takes place between the border security forces of both the countries India and Pakistan.

The Historical site that witnessed the mass massacre of by the British still has the bullet marks on the boundary walls of the Infamous Jalianwala Bag massacre. Another important Sikh shrine is Tarn Taran built in the lines of Golden Temple. People believe that the lake inside the shrine has healing properties and is said to heal leprosy and other skin ailments.

On the fringes of Amritsar their lies, a temple with historical significance for Hindus, the Ram Tirath Temple and the birth place of Lav and Kush. It also has Valmiki ashram and statues depicting scenes of Ramayana.
